Meeting of the Ukrainian National Platform of Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum

ссс1The annual conference of the Ukrainian National Platform of Eastern Partnership Civil Society Forum (Ukrainian National Platform, UNP EaP CSF) took place on the 16-17th of September 2013.

The meeting was attended by Ian Tombinskiy - Ambassador of European Union to Ukraine, Petras Vaitiekunas - Lithuanian Ambassador to Ukraine, Vsevolod Chyentsov - Head of the European Union department of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Borys Tarasyuk - Co-Chair of the Parliamentary Assembly Euronest, Gregoriy Nemyrya - Chairman of the European Integration Commission of Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, as well as by more than 100 representatives of civil society organizations - members of the Ukrainian National Platform.

Distinguished speakers at the conference shared their expectations of the EU summit, planned for Vilnius in 2013. In particular, all the participants, among them - representatives of legislative and executive power, the ruling political party and the opposition agreed on the necessity of signing the Association Agreement between Ukraine and the EU (EU - Ukraine Association Agreement). But it has to be emphasized that unresolved problems in Ukraine, such as: non-transparent elections, non-adequate protection of human rights and selective justice in particular remain as obstacles on the way to signing Association Agreement with Ukraine. The third important cluster for Ukraine - is to create a favorable business climate in Ukraine. As pointed by the ambassador of the EU, these issues should be addressed by Ukraine before the Summit in Vilnius. Representative of the Government of Ukraine noted that the important task of the government – is to minimize the possible negative consequences that Ukraine may face in economic sphere in the case of signing EU - Ukraine Association Agreement.

All officials noted the important role of public sector to overcome existing obstacles to Ukraine's European integration. It was emphasized that the task of civil society is not only to convince the authorities to sign the Association Agreement, but to urge the authorities to implement all the conditions of this Agreement and the requirements of the EU imposed on Ukraine. Members of public should be prepared for monitoring activities in this area and carrying necessary explanatory work among the population.

The members of the UNP EaP CSF discussed and agreed text of a Statement on Association Agreement between the EU and Ukraine, in which the President of Ukraine, Cabinet of Ministers and the Parliament of Ukraine are urged to adopt decisions that prove complete understanding of the criteria imposed on Ukraine in the area of overcoming selective justice, elections and prosecutors legislation reform for the European integration of our country. At the same time it was noted that the EU - Ukraine Association Agreement will push for positive reforms in Ukraine, and civil society in Ukraine will actively work for the implementation of such reforms.
